ABSTRACT: Since the 1990s Ryuko Kubota has extensively researched race, identity, and critical approaches to teacher development in the area of Applied Linguistics (AL). More recently, her last publications include the relevance of translanguaging and ongoing work with the Sister Scholars. As the result of our interest in Kubota’s extremely significant discussions, in this interview, Kubota points out the challenges AL has faced in the last years, as well as the complexities of working in the Global North. Besides, she provides compelling insights in antiracist pedagogy and the role of Freire in English language teaching.

RESUMO: Desde os anos 1990, Ryuko Kubota tem pesquisado temas relacionados à raça, identidade e abordagens críticas de formação de professores na área de Linguística Aplicada (LA). Recentemente, sua produção inclui a relevância da translinguagem e seu trabalho contínuo com as Sister Scholars. Nesta entrevista, fruto do nosso interesse nas discussões propostas pela pesquisadora, Kubota discute os desafios que a LA tem enfrentado nos últimos anos, bem como as complexidades de se trabalhar no Norte Global. Ademais, a estudiosa fornece contribuições valiosas sobre uma pedagogia antirracista e o papel do educador Paulo Freire no ensino de língua inglesa.

Resumo: O meu objetivo, neste artigo, é compartilhar uma reflexão inicial sobre um grupo de performances sociodiscursivas às quais tenho me referido como masculinidades bélicas, reflexão construída a partir de um diálogo indisciplinar com diferentes áreas do saber. Tendo como base a leitura crítica de duas performances e atendo-me ao contexto sociopolítico brasileiro atual, argumento que as masculinidades bélicas se caracterizam pelo engajamento dos sujeitos em práticas necrodiscursivas que (re)produzem enquadres de guerra em diferentes espaços sociais. Desse modo, sugiro o trabalho com letramentos pós-identitários como forma de estranhar textualmente os repertórios mobilizados por masculinidades bélicas, a fim de construir sentidos, performances e enquadres que desafiem o paradigma e a retórica da guerra, no Brasil contemporâneo. Abstract: My objective in this article is to share an opening reflection on a group of socio-discursive performances that I have termed bellicose masculinities, a reflection that is rooted in an indisciplinary dialogue with different areas of knowledge. Based on the critical reading of two performances and considering the current Brazilian socio-political context, I argue that bellicose masculinities are characterized by the subjects’ engagement in necrodiscursive practices that (re)produce frames of war in different social contexts. Therefore, I suggest the work with post-identity literacies as a way of textually queering the repertoires mobilized by bellicose masculinities, so that it becomes possible to produce meanings, performances, and frames that challenge the paradigm and the rhetoric of war in contemporary Brazil. Resumo This paper seeks to point to the role of the phenomenon called ‘translanguaging’ as a wake-up call, as well as a call to action against the hegemony of the Global North in the way it has traditionally disparaged the Global South, undercutting the latter’s bona fide aspirations to a place on a level playing field. In undertaking this task, it explores the potentially subversive aspect of translanguaging and also ignores the reclaimings of equal action fields to all that work there. It is argued that it is all too easy to miss the wood for the trees here by those who would rather look at the phenomenon as fundamentally a question of switching between different languages – so-called ‘code-switching’ – with great abandon and true spirit of laissez faire. In this paper, I shall turn my attention instead to what I call the ‘politics of translanguaging’. By that, what I intend to mean to press home is that people, especially in postcolonial settings, have used translanguaging as an effective means to challenge the last vestiges of colonial power that persist thanks to the lingering effects of coloniality by deliberately ‘muddying the communicative waters’ through their translanguaging practices – a process that will be analysed in closer detail through examination of postcolonial literary works. Postcolonial writers of the likes of Arundhati Roy are past masters at this.

Abstract Este trabalho procura atentar para o papel do fenômeno chamado “translinguagem” como um despertador e, ao mesmo tempo, um grito de guerra contra a hegemonia do Norte Global, no que diz respeito à forma com ele tradicionalmente vem desdenhando o Sul Global, desmerecendo as aspirações deste, que são inteiramente procedentes, de reivindicar um campo de atuação com condições equitativas para todos que nele atuam – aproveitando-se de características subversivas da transliguagem. Aponta-se que é fácil perder de vista o que realmente está em jogo, perigo este que corremos principalmente quando lançamos os olhos para o fenômeno de translinguagem como sendo, meramente, uma questão de transitar entre diferentes línguas livremente, sem quaisquer restrições. Neste trabalho, pretendo focar numa dimensão importante do fenômeno que chamarei de “a política de translinguagem”. Com o uso deste termo, pretendo sustentar que as pessoas, notadamente em contextos pós-coloniais, têm recorrido à translinguagem como um meio bastante efetivo de desafiar os últimos vestígios do poder colonial que persistem entre elas, graças aos efeitos da colonialidade. Elas o fazem por intermédio de um esforço de turvar as águas, utilizando a translinguagem – um processo que será examinado em maiores detalhes com referência a obras literárias pós-coloniais. Escritores pós-coloniais como Arundhati Roy são mestres dessa tática.

Abstract: This article is part of a project on social justice and its objective here is twofold: to present the partial results of an ongoing research, which started in September, in 2019, to show evidence that translanguaging is only mentioned once by one of the research participants, which reinforces the need to approach it in educational environment and to illustrate the place of emotion, silence and meaning making towards social justice, through the analysis of a short film, seeking to expand studies on translanguaging. This is also justified by the fact that, undergraduate students majoring in Portuguese and English languages, understand translanguaging as the uses of diverse languages, but do not recognize trans-semiosis, emotion and silence as entangled in meaning making. It borrows views from García; Alves ( 2019), García; Wei ( 2014), García ( 2020), Blackledge; Creese ( 2011), Canagarajah ( 2013), Makalela ( 2015, 2016, 2017), Makalela; Dhokotera ( 2021), Nkadimeng; Makalela ( 2015) in dialogue with decolonial perspectives by Grosfoguel ( 2013), Menezes de Souza ( 2021), Mignolo; Walsh ( 2018), Maldonado-Torres ( 2007), Quijano ( 2007) and Southern theories by Santos ( 2018). Views on emotion are supported by Barcelos (2005) and Aragão ( 2011). Concerning silence, it draws on localized and meaningful aspects, as argued by Granger ( 2004) and King ( 2013). The methodology is qualitative and interpretive, assuming my intersubjectivity ingrained in the aforementioned theories, which also inform my locus of enunciation to analyze the film in question. The participants are all volunteers chosen according to the sequence of their affirmative responses to want to become informants of this research. This group is formed of five professors, (under)graduate students of languages from public Brazilian universities. Working on and/or studying at public universities was crucial for the criterion concerning the invitations. The instruments to generate data include online individual interviews and questionnaires. One question of each of these modalities is sent to the participants via WhatsApp and/or email per term. This is the penultimate one. The partial results reveal that translanguaging might gain potentials for experimentation, setting emotion and silence into movements with religious, identitary, cultural and political issues, away from stability. Such movements embrace their own danger, relief and ambiguity, playing a crucial role in translanguaging for social justice.

Resumo: Este artigo é parte de uma pesquisa sobre justiça social e seu objetivo aqui é duplo: apresentar resultados parciais de uma pesquisa em andamento, que iniciou em setembro de 2019, para evidenciar que a translinguagem é mencionada apenas uma vez por um dos participantes, o que reforça a necessidade de abordá-la no ambiente educacional e ilustrar o lugar da emoção, do silêncio e da construção de sentido rumo à justiça social, por meio da análise de um curta, buscando expandir estudos de translinguagem. Isso se justifica pelo fato de que graduandos de português e inglês entendem translinguagem como usos de diversas línguas, mas não reconhecem a trans-semiosis, o silêncio e a emoção enredada na construção de sentido. A metodologia é qualitativa, interpretativista, assumindo minha intersubjetividade enredada nas teorias supracitadas que informam meu lócus de enunciação para analisar o filme em questão. Os participantes são voluntários escolhidos de acordo com a sequência das respostas afirmativas para se tornarem membros desta pesquisa. O grupo é formado por cinco docentes, seis pós-graduandos e seis graduandos em línguas de universidades brasileiras públicas. Trabalhar e/ou estudar em universidades públicas foi o critério usado para os convites. Os instrumentos de geração de dados incluem entrevistas e questionários individuais e online. Uma pergunta de cada modalidade é enviada via WhatsApp e/ou e-mail para os participantes semestralmente. Este é o penúltimo semestre. Os resultados parciais revelam que a translinguagem pode expandir o potencial de experimentação, lançando emoção e silêncio em movimentos com questões religiosas, identitárias, culturais, e políticas distanciando-se da estabilidade. Tais movimentos contemplam seus próprios perigos, alívios e ambiguidade, um papel crucial na translinguagem em direção à justiça social.

ABSTRACT: This paper draws from the ethnography that we, two researchers in Applied Linguistics, have carried out for a decade in the Complexo do Alemão favelas, in Rio de Janeiro. Favelas are inhabited by a mostly Black population, who are disproportionately affected by Brazil’s notorious necropolitics. Further, the monopoly of violence in Brazil is not exclusive to the State, as the “world of crime”, even if fragmented, is also a relevant agent in this dynamic. The sociology of violence posits that the crossfire between the State and other armed agents stifle residents’ political demands. Yet we engage with some residents who speak up and create innovative ways to confront the violence that is aimed at them. In this paper, we explore digital rockets, the papo reto activist register and artivism as modes of surviving enacted by favela residents in their pursuit of more equitable futures.

RESUMO: Este artigo tem raízes na etnografia que nós, dois pesquisadores em Linguística Aplicada, realizamos há mais de 10 anos no Complexo do Alemão carioca. Territórios periféricos como esse são marcados por uma necropolítica imposta pelo Estado brasileiro, que violenta e executa, principalmente, a população negra predominante nessas áreas. A regulação da violência no Brasil, contudo, não é exclusividade do Estado, pois o “mundo do crime”, mesmo fragmentado, também é agente relevante nessa dinâmica. Em meio ao fogo cruzado que se estabelece entre o Estado e os outros agentes dessa gestão armada, moradores de favelas constroem formas criativas de afrontar as violências, inclusive letais, que lhes são destinadas. Aqui, exploramos os fogos digitais, o registro ativista papo reto e o artivismo como estratégias dos moradores de favela para sobreviver e construir futuros mais justos.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to investigate the professional context of Portuguese as a foreign language teachers at Região Metropolitana de Campinas (RMC) through an analysis of geopolitical outlines which concern on democratic management of an initial education undergraduate course. Based on an exploratory cartography, I intended to select and organize data groups considering migration demographic aspects at RMC, official documents and pedagogical projects as well as other data compilation through bibliographical research. By means of that database, I have proposed some potentially relevant movements concerning democratic management theories aiming to promote a forward-looking vision to Portuguese as a foreign language teachers.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho é mapear o contexto profissional do professor de Português Língua Estrangeira na Região Metropolitana de Campinas (RMC), analisando os contornos geopolíticos que incidem na gestão democrática de um curso de formação inicial. Por meio de uma cartografia de caráter exploratório, seleciono e organizo agrupamentos de dados que consideram aspectos da demografia migratória na RMC, documentos oficiais e projetos pedagógicos de cursos, assim como outros conjuntos de dados recortados por meio de uma investigação de caráter bibliográfico. Tendo por base esses conjuntos de dados, procurei destacar movimentos potencialmente relevantes, em diálogo com a perspectiva da gestão democrática, os quais propiciassem uma visão de futuro ao docente em Português Língua Estrangeira.

Abstract: This case study explores the dynamics of the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking self-concept of a female university student. The study focuses on the participant’s internal and external frames of reference ( MERCER, 2011b) to analyze how her EFL speaking self-concept has been constructed throughout her years of English language instruction, and how it is re-constructed and developed in the current course. Findings show that such self-concept originates from beliefs systems, emotions, learner characteristics, previous English language learning context/method, critical experiences and experiences of success/failure using the oral language. Results indicate that critical positive experiences and perceived experiences of success appear to influence positively the learner’s self-efficacy beliefs and emotional experiences about the oral task.

Resumo: Este estudo de caso explora a dinâmica do autoconceito da fala de Inglês como Língua Estrangeira (ILE) de uma estudante universitária. O estudo enfoca os quadros de referência interno e externo do participante ( MERCER, 2011b) para analisar como seu autoconceito de fala de ILE foi construído ao longo de seus anos de ensino da língua inglesa, e como ele é reconstruído e desenvolvido no curso atual. Os resultados mostram que tal autoconceito origina-se de sistemas de crenças, emoções, características do aluno, contexto método de aprendizagem anterior da língua inglesa, experiências críticas e experiências de sucesso/fracasso usando a linguagem oral. Os resultados indicam que as experiências críticas positivas e as experiências percebidas de sucesso parecem influenciar positivamente as crenças de autoeficácia do aluno e as experiências emocionais sobre a tarefa oral.

ABSTRACT: This paper aims to describe some scenes performed by students from São Paulo public schools, especially from the peripheries, at the VIII Inter-School Slams of São Paulo, to discuss and analyze literary literacies practices. This poetic event was observed on site by the authors of this paper, specifically the poetic performance of elementary school student Manoella de Souza, from the state school called Dona Luiza Macuco. The authors of this research take the perspective of literary literacies (Amorim; Domingues; Klayn; Silva, 2022; Neves, 2021a), literacies of reexistence (Souza, 2011; Duboc; Menezes De Souza, 2021; Walsh, 2009, 2019) and critical literacies (Monte-Mór, 2015, 2019) in defense of Poetry Slam as a political-poetic-performative act by young people from the outskirts of São Paulo.

RESUMO: Este artigo se propõe a descrever algumas cenas performadas por estudantes de escolas públicas paulistas, sobretudo das periferias, no VIII Slam Interescolar de São Paulo, visando discutir e analisar práticas de letramentos literários. Esse evento poético foi observado in loco pelos autores deste artigo, em específico, a performance poética da estudante do ensino fundamental II, Manoella de Souza, da Escola Estadual Dona Luiza Macuco. Os autores desta pesquisa assumem a perspectiva dos letramentos literários (Amorim; Domingues; Klayn; Silva, 2022; Neves, 2021a), dos letramentos de reexistência (Souza, 2011; Duboc; Menezes De Souza, 2021; Walsh, 2009, 2019) e dos letramentos críticos (Monte-Mór, 2015, 2019) em defesa do Poetry Slam como ato político-poético-performático de jovens da periferia paulistana.

ABSTRACT: When it comes to being a bilingual child in Brazil, it is not about any form of bilingualism, however, that is valued. Despite its characterisation, English is seen as a commodity, often sold as the sole tool responsible for professional development and financial success, even when considering children. The core argument of this paper is that some Brazilian politicians have done the right thing (i.e., promoting a Foreign Language Education, in this case English or Spanish, to young learners) for the wrong reason (i.e., believing they can promote the English or Spanish Language Education to guarantee the children’s professional success in the future). In order to illustrate this viewpoint, excerpts from two Brazilian politicians are considered, besides excerpts from other social actors. As the analysis unfolds, four questions are addressed: (1) To whose desires is a society of the global South responding to whose desires?; (2) Right thing for the wrong reasons?; (3) Who gets to walk on the red carpet?; and (4) Where does the magic carpet promise to take us?

RESUMO: No que diz respeito a ser uma criança bilíngue no Brasil, não se trata de qualquer forma de bilinguismo, mas aquela que é valorizada. Apesar de sua caracterização, o inglês é visto como uma mercadoria; frequentemente vendido como a única ferramenta responsável pelo desenvolvimento profissional e sucesso financeiro, mesmo quando se trata de crianças. O argumento central neste artigo é que alguns políticos brasileiros fizeram a coisa certa (i.e., promover o Ensino de Língua Estrangeira, neste caso o Inglês ou o Espanhol, para jovens aprendizes) pelo motivo errado (i.e., acreditando que podem promover o Ensino de Língua Inglesa ou Espanhola agora para garantir o sucesso profissional das crianças no futuro). Para ilustrar esse ponto de vista, são considerados trechos de dois políticos brasileiros, além de excertos de outros atores sociais. À medida que o desenrolar, quatro questões são abordadas: (1) Aos desejos de quem uma sociedade do Sul global responde aos interesses; (2) Coisa certa pelos motivos errados?; (3) Quem pode andar no tapete vermelho?; e (4) Onde o tapete mágico promete nos levar?

RESUMO: Conhecendo a abrangência da televisão para a disseminação de informações, entretenimento e ideologias, este trabalho investiga a caracterização das falas de personagens de duas obras da teledramaturgia brasileira, O Sétimo Guardião ( 2018) e Verdades Secretas ( 2015), buscando (re)conhecer se a representação pode encaminhar os telespectadores a uma avaliação negativa desses personagens devido à sua forma de se expressar pela fala, ou se a representação legitima os falares como marcas de identidade. Os estudos da sociolinguística fundamentam as análises, sobretudo teóricos como Labov ( 2008), Pagotto ( 2004), Bortoni-Ricardo ( 2009, 2011) e Bagno ( 2015). Por meio de uma pesquisa qualitativa que utilizou como método a proposta de Bortoni-Ricardo ( 2009), em que se alocam os falantes analisados em pontos de linhas imaginárias de acordo com sua expressão linguística, em especial na alocação dos falantes no “contínuo de urbanização”, foi possível concluir que uma das narrativas televisivas se mostra repleta de traços caricaturais, oportunizando avaliações negativas enquanto a outra traz representatividade por apresentar as identidades representadas com fidedignidade.

ABSTRACT: Knowing the scope of television for the dissemination of information, entertainment, and ideologies, this paper investigates the characterization of two characters’ speech features from two Brazilian soap opera works: O Sétimo Guardião ( 2018), and Verdades Secretas ( 2015), seeking to recognize if the representation can lead viewers to a negative evaluation of characters based on how they express themselves by speaking, or if the representation legitimizes speech as mark of identity. We based the analyses on the Sociolinguistics studies, especially those of Labov ( 2008), Pagotto ( 2004), Bortoni-Ricardo ( 2009, 2011), and Bagno ( 2015). By using qualitative research following the method proposed by Bortoni-Ricardo ( 2009), in which the analyzed speakers are allocated in points of imaginary lines according to their linguistic expression, especially in the “urbanization continuum”, we could conclude that one of the television narratives brings caricature traits, providing opportunities for negative evaluations, whereas the other brings out representation since it reliably shows the represented identities.

RESUMO: Este artigo analisa como a mulher é semiotizada no filme O sorriso de Mona Lisa (2003), com o objetivo de pensar sobre como o embate entre tradição e revolução reflete e refrata valores sociais sobre o que significa ser mulher. Centrado nas protagonistas, este estudo se volta às vozes sociais tradicional e subversiva em embate. A relevância se justifica pela reflexão acerca da movimentação valorativa interna-externa que constitui os sujeitos-mulheres e as sociedades no grande tempo da cultura. O filme é analisado em sua unidade verbivocovisual. A fundamentação teórica bakhtiniana embasa a análise em seu movimento metodológico materialista histórico-dialético- dialógico, com a utilização, principalmente, dos conceitos de diálogo, ideologia e vozes sociais. Para analisar questões relativas ao feminismo, serão utilizados os estudos de Beauvoir, Saffioti, Davis, Studart, hooks e Ribeiro. Os resultados revelam como a pressão social sobre a mulher a afeta e impacta a sociedade. O sorriso de Mona Lisa semiotiza movimentos históricos e culturais em ressurgência na contemporaneidade, e é urgente refletir sobre isso.

ABSTRACT: This article analyses how the woman is semiotized in the movie Mona Lisa Smile (2003), aiming to think about how the conflict between tradition and revolution reflects and refracts social values of what it means to be a woman. Centered on the protagonists, this study focuses on traditional and subversive social voices in conflict. The reflection on the internal-external valuation movement that constitutes subjects-women and societies in the great time of culture justifies its relevance. It analyzes the film in its verbivocovisual unity. The Bakhtinian theoretical foundation supports the analysis in its dialectical-dialogical-historical materialist methodological movement, using mainly the concepts of dialogue, ideology, and social voices. To analyze issues related to feminism, studies from Beauvoir, Saffioti, Davis, Studart, hooks, and Ribeiro will be used. The results reveal how the social pressure on women affects them and impacts society. Mona Lisa Smile semiotizes historical and cultural movements in resurgence in the contemporaneity and reflecting on this is urgent.

RESUMO: Este texto aborda as políticas linguísticas públicas educacionais sobre a oferta de línguas estrangeiras no Brasil e no Uruguai na primeira década do século XXI. O objetivo é problematizar a interpretação de leis nacionais, a partir das três unidades escolhidas para o desenvolvimento de um estudo comparado, a saber: lugar, tempo e políticas. O trabalho é meritório por sustentar uma valoração situada dos elementos mais significativos da comparação e por mostrar a complexidade da proposição e da compreensão dessas políticas. Notabiliza-se, mediante as análises, que nas leis que dispõem sobre línguas estrangeiras na educação dos dois países, o vínculo sul-sul não teve uma posição destacada no período selecionado, mas apenas consentida.

ABSTRACT: This text approaches public educational language policies regarding the provision of foreign languages in Brazil and in Uruguay in the first decade of the 21st century. It aims to discuss the interpretation of national laws, from the three units chosen for the development of a comparative study, namely: place, time, and policies. The study is meritorious for supporting a situated valuation of the most significant elements of the comparison, and for showing the complexity of the proposal and of the understanding of these policies. The analyses show that in the laws that provide for foreign languages in education in both countries, the south-south connection did not have a prominent position in the selected period, only a consensual one.

RESUMO: Este artigo objetiva discutir o gaydar enquanto exercício de poder, tomando como base o conceito de dispositivo por Foucault (2014) e Agamben (2005). Não parto da premissa de que seja possível identificar a sexualidade dos sujeitos como Rule (2011) e Sulpizio et al. (2020). Ao contrário, investigo o gaydar como um dispositivo histórico utilizado para o exercício do poder, do saber. Para isso, analiso um comercial de uma companhia de seguro: Adão e Eva no paraíso. Primeiramente, relaciono o gaydar às concepções de performatividade de gênero e de sexualidade. Em seguida, discuto como o perfilamento linguístico ( BAUGH, 2003) e a indexicalidade ( SILVERSTEIN, 2003) atuam como técnicas de poder investidas por este dispositivo. Por fim, aponto como as metapragmáticas ( SIGNORINI, 2008) são relevantes para compreender o uso do gaydar ao analisar um comercial de seguros que culmina na apresentação de diversos dispositivos para seu domínio.

ABSTRACT: This article aims to discuss the gaydar as an exercise of power, based on the concept of apparatus by Foucault (2014) and Agamben (2005). I do not suppose that is possible to identify one’s sexuality like Rule (2011) e Sulpizio et al. (2020) do. On the contrary, I investigate the gaydar as a historical apparatus used to exert power, knowledge. To do so I analyse a commercial of an insurance company named Adam and Eve. Firstly, I relate gaydar to the performative conceptions of gender and sexuality. Secondly, I discuss how linguistic profiling ( BAUGH, 2003) and indexicality ( SILVERSTEIN, 2003) act as power techniques invested by this device. Finally, I point out how metapragmatics ( SIGNORINI, 2008) are relevant to understanding the use of gaydar when analyzing an insurance commercial ending with the presentation of several apparatus for its control.
